Designing patterns and such

I've been a shamefully bad blogger over the last few years. My excuse is that life got in the way and I decided to focus on knitting, rather than blogging when I had some spare time.

In the spring of 2015 (after having spent the previous year on a wedding related knitting bender) I decided to try if I could design a pattern myself. It started off with a simple enough baby hat and then I decided to try my hand at shawl design and then at adult sized head wear. Most of my patterns are only available in Finnish so far, as they've been publish in Ulla, a Finnish online knitting magazine that's published 3 times a year. However, I've been working on English versions of some of them.

The first one of those is the English version of Laraha, an asymmetrical triangular shawl, that was inspired by the Caribbean island of Curaçao, which I had visited on my honeymoon in the spring of 2015.

Bling bling, and cameo appearances

Otan jo neljättä vuotta peräkkäin osaa Ravelryssä järjestettävään huivihaasteeseen. Vuoden 2013 ajatus on saada aikaan 12 huivia vuoden aikana.

For the fourth year running, I'm taking part in a shawl challenge on Ravelry. In 2013, the idea is to complete 12 shawls during the year.

Vaikka kalenterin mukaan onkin melkein kevät, lämpötilan mukaan talvi pitelee etelärannikoakin hoteissaan tällä hetkellä. Uusimmat huivit sopivatkin mainiosti tähän vuoden aikaan.

Even though one might think it was already spring from the time of year, winter is keeping a firm grip on the Southern Coast. My newest shawls should fit this time of year just fine.

Piewhacket valmistui muutamassa päivässä bling-langasta, ja se onkin valmiina pintana paljon kivempi kuin mitä langassa ollut kimalle olisi antanut odottaa.

I finished my Piewhacket within a few days, and the finished product is far more wearable than the bling would have suggested.

Seuraava projektini olikin luonteeltaan aivan erilaatuinen, sillä ajatuksena oli totutella taas vanhaan lempiväriin, pinkkiin. Hyvn se toimikin, sillä huivi on ollut valmistuttuaan ahkerassa käytössä.

My next project was a different beast altogether, as my aim was to familiarise myself with an old favourite colour, pink. It turned out to be a repeat cameo role, as I've used it most days since I finished it.

2012 recap

- completed a total of 8 shawls, 2 blanket squares (including the first crocheted object I've done in years), a cowl for my Beloved, a baby bib and an exfoliating mitt.

- knit and spun in front of my Beloved's family.

- lost a much loved grandparent and therefore took on the task of knitting a funeral appropriate shawl.

 - started two separate shawls out of some of the skinniest yarns in my stash.

- bought yarn in joy and in sorrow, out of boredom and frustration, and just because it was too pretty to leave behind.

- spent January on a partial yarn diet, with Alarwyn as my enforcer.

- went to the yearly Tampere craft fair for the first time with Alarwyn.

More projects from 2012

Just to prove that I have actually been knitting :)

I'm usually a very selfish knitter, with the exception of projects I've given to much loved friends and family members. However, in June I put some of my selfishness aside and took part in a friend's effort to create a comfort blanket for the psychiatric care unit of her local hospital.

She wanted fairly fine gauge wool squares made with machine-washable yarn, so I spent one of the days of my summer holiday knitting a square on the bias, using various sock yarn leftovers. I don't think I have a picture of the finished square, so you will have to make do with this partly knitted square for an idea of what my effort looks like.

 A fellow Raveller and Facebook friend went through an awful and devestating loss at the beginning of June. To show our condolances, one of the groups I'm an active member of decided to make a blanket for her and her family so they could wrap themselves up in our hugs and good wishes when the sorrow is overwhelming.

 I'm definitely not a crocheter, but I made an exception and did my best to crochet something resembling a granny square. It's not the prettiest of granny squares, but my intentions were good.

And before you all start believing I've complete forgotten about my selfish tendencies, fear not. I did actually finish a shawl for myself too.

 The Henslowe pattern is genius. It starts off simply enough with a garter stitch triangle, but the end result is fabulous!

Still here...

The first few months of 2012 have just flown by. I can hardly believe that May is almost halfway through, and I've yet to post a single thing on this blog.

Like every year, I began 2012 with lofty ideas of using more of my ever expanding stash, and buying yarn only when I need it. However, that idea didn't really work, as I managed to amass a fair amount of yarn even during January, when I was supposed to be on a semi-yarn diet. Alarwyn and I had agreed that with the exception of birthday yarn, all yarn purchases in January had to be approved by the other.

 I have managed to finish some projects, so it's not like the only thing I've been doing is increasing the size of my stash.

This shawl is my first project of the year. I used the increase pattern from Ysolda Teague's Damson shawl, but otherwise it was purely a project of my imagination.

The shawl is surprisingly warm from something knit in a laceweight blend of wool and silk, so it's been used a great deal so far.

My version of the Eternal Spring Shawl was finished next.

Most recently I finished my Cladonia.

Cowls galore

As Christmas is now over, I can finally share what I spent a fair while knitting in the run-up to Christmas.

The yarn is wonderful, and I'd definitely like to knit with it again. The pattern was also genius, but the next time I knit it, I'll definitely use an extra circular for the provisional cast on, as unpicking the crochet chain from the provisional CO I used was a true pain ;)

I also cast on a cowl for myself too. I'm knitting Veera Välimäki's cabled cowl and using Pohjan Akka dyed by Tuulia of Knitlob's Lair, yet another genius dyer I've been lucky enough to meet.

Isin tyttö - Daddy's girl

Olen aina ollut isäni tyttö, niin luonteeltani, kuin kasvoiltanikin.

Viime viikonloppuna Hopeasäikeen Pirrellä oli myynnissä vyyhti Hopeasäie Sukkaa, jonka väri oli nimetty isäni kaimaksi. Pakkohan se oli ostaa, kun satuin muistamaan, että olen jo muutama vuosi sitten sanonut neulovani isälle sormettomat hanskat. Vaikka neulonkin useimmiten itselleni, neulon aina välillä rakkaillenikin ;)


I've always been a daddy's girl, both in temperment and in outward appearence.

Last weekend, Pirre from Hopeasäie had a skeing of her Sukka-sockyarn for sale, which had been dyed in a colourway that was my father's namesake. I had to buy it, as I also happened to remember, that I'd told him I'd make him a pair of fingerless gloves a few years ago. So while I knit for myself most of the time, I do knit for the people I love on occasion ;)

Hush hush

On taas se aika vuodesta, jolloin käsityöblogia on jokseenkin hankala pitää. Valmistuneet työt kun rupeavat kuiskuttelemaan haluavansa sen ja sen ystävän joulupakettiin.

It's that time of year again, when finished projects start to whisper into one's ear, telling one that they want to be wrapped up and gifted to such and such for Christmas.

That's why today's photo is from a project I started months ago. The pattern is Arroyo and I'm knitting it with Silk Aran.

700m and 3 weeks

Ostin upean sinisen vyyhdin Grignascon MerinoSilk-pitsilankaa joskus aikana ennen nykyistä huiviobsessiota. Raukkaparka joutui odottamaan puikoille pääsyä hävyttömän kauan, ja nytkin langasta on käytetty vaan hitusen yli 700 metriä (vyyhdissä on kokonaisuudessaan 1400m/100g).

I bought a skein of lovely royal blue MerinoSilk (a very fine laceweight yarn manufactured by Grignasco) a good while before my current obsession with shawls. The poor yarn lingered in my stash for far longer than it should have had to, and even now I've only used a touch over 700m, out of the 1400m total.




Neuloin ensimmäisen Citronini noin 1½ vuotta sitten, mutta siitä tuli minulle liian pieni, joten se muutti ystävän luoksen. Toivottavasti tästä pingottuu riittävän suuri huivi minulle. Valmiin työn kuvaaminen joutuu odottamaan hetken, sillä tässä köhässä en jaksa ruveta pingottamaan huivia.

I knit my first Citron about 18 months ago, but as it turned out too small, it went to live with a friend. I hope that once blocked, this will be big enough for me. It might be a while until I manage to snap a pic of the blocked shawl, as I don't fancy blocking stuff, what with this cough I caught.

Return of the monster shawl - Monsterihuivin paluu

Last autumn I blogged about the original monster shawl. In fact, I prefer my shawls rather wide, so that I can wrap them around my fairly substantial torso and shoulders. However, that does of course often mean that some of my larger shawls take a fair while to knit, and eat up a good bit of yarn, as well.

Bloggasin viime syksynä alkuperäisestä monsterihuivista. Itseasiassa pidänkin isohkoista huiveista, sillä niitä on helpompi kääriä leveiden hartioiden ja yläkropan ympärille. Tämä kuitenkin usein tarkoittaa sitä, että isohkoiden huivien neulomiseen menee kiitettävästi aikaa, ja lankaakin.

This shawl only took two skeins of yarn, which was a bit of a surprise. As winter is fast approaching, I doubt I'll get much use out of this linen shawl, but there's always next summer. I hope that the shawl will then get a chance to protect my shoulders from the sun.

Tähän huiviin menikin vain kaksi vyyhtiä lankaa, joka yllätti neulojan. Koska talvi lähenee joka päivä, taitaa tämä huivi päätyä kaappiin odottamaan ensi kesää, jolloin se toivottavasti pääsee suojelemaan hartioita auringolta.



The pic was taken on top of my parents' dining table, that seats 12. Our flat doesn't really have a place where I could spread out a shawl that's just under 3 metres wide.

Catching up

As I've posted earlier, I'm taking part in the "11 shawls in 2011"-challenge on Ravelry. I started knitting several shawls earlier on in the year, but for some reason some of the earlier shawls have fallen to the wayside, and I've only finished 6 shawls so far. However, I finished one shawl last weekend, and I managed to bind off the linen shawl I've been knitting since the beginning of June.

This is my version of Veera Välimäki's Blackcurrant Shawl, but pictures of the linen shawl will have to wait, as I doubt I'd get a decent photo at this time of night in October ;)

Ennakoivaa väriterapiaakö - Preventative colour therapy, perhaps?

Eilen oli ensimmäinen oikein perinteisen syksyinen päivä. Onhan niitä harmaita päiviä ollut jo aiemminkin, mutta jotenkin kuluvan viikon torstai onnistui kaikessa sateentihkuisessa harmaudessaan kuvaamaan alkavaa syksyä täydellisesti. Ei ne syyskuun sateet kivoja olleet, mutta nyt kun lehdetkin ovat alkaneet tippua puista on todettava, että kyllä, nyt on syksy.

Yesteday was the first day so far the managed to conjure up the image of a typically autumnal day. Even though we had a few grey and dreary days in September, but this past Thursday just hit the nail on the head in all its drizzly glory. Personally, I blame it on the fact that the leaves have started to fall, which automatically makes me think that autumn has indeed arrived.

Onnistuin tänään lisäksi joutumaan rankahkon sadekuuron uhriksi kotimatkalla, ja sitten myöhemmin kauppareissulla. Mutta ei se mitään, syksy tulkoon!

I even managed to get caught in a short but intense rain shower on my way home, and then went to the shop during another shower. But that's ok, bring on the autumn.

Olen nimittäin jo hetken miettinyt mikä mua vaivaa, kun kaiken maailman oudot värit ovat yht'äkkiä ruvenneet huutelemaan puskista. Keltaiset, punaiset, jopa pinkit ovat ruvenneet näyttämään houkuttelevilta. Kai se on todettava vain, että elimistö yrittää muistuttaa, että syksyn harmaudessa ja talven viimoissa voi joskus olla hauskaa muistella kesän väriloistoa, vaikkakin keltaisen huivin tai pipon muodossa.

I've been worried about my wellbeing recently, as a whole host of strange colours have tried to lure me in. Yellows, reds and even pinks have started to look scarily appealing. The only logical explanation, surely, is that my system is trying to remind me that vibrant summery colours can be refreshing in the greyness of autumn or when the wintery winds blow hardest, even when it comes in the form of a yellow shawl or hat.

Älkää siis ihmetelkö, jos puikoilta rupeaa tulemaan oudon värisiä asioita, yritän vaan ehkäistä pahinta kaamosta näin etukäteen.
So please don't be alarmed if my knitted objects suddenly change colour. I'm just trying to prevent the worst hit of the seasonal blues.

Wassermusik

Ostin kerän Noron Sekku-pitsilankaa (joka oli muuten ensimmäinen Noron pitsilanka jota olen neulonut) muutama viikko sitten. Ainaisena sinisen, liilan ja turkoosin eri sävyjen ystävänä en voinut olla ostamatta sitä. Vietin sitten yhden illan etsien oikeaa mallia langalle. Loppujen lopuksi malliksi valikoitui yksinkertainen kolmiohuivi, joka löytyy Ravelrystä nimellä "Josephinentuch".

I bought a skein of Noro's Sekku (the first Noro laceweight I'd ever used) a few weeks ago. As a major fan of all the different shades of blue, purple and turquoise, I couldn't leave it at the stall I bought it from. I then spent a night going through pages and pages of shawl patterns of Ravelry. In the end, a simple triangular shawl called "Josephinentuch" proved to be just the thing I'd been looking for.

Kolmannen neljänneksen osavuosikatsaus - 3rd quarter analysis

Ravelryn mukaan olen aloittanut 13 projektia kuluvan vuoden aikana. Niistä kolme on tähän mennessä valmistunut, ja loput ovat enemmän tai vähemmän kesken. Ilmankos puikkoja ei ole koskaan liikaa ;)

According to project list on Ravelry, I've actually started 13 projects this year. I've completed 3 and the rest of them are in progress. No wonder I can never have too many circular needles ;)

Completed in 2011, so far:


Testineulottu huivi korkkasi hääkauden Espoossa, 1.7.
This was a test knit for the designer and worn to the first wedding of the year in Espoo on July 1st.

This silken confection, as well as its fellow wedding shawl, got to go abroad to Poland in August, where both were admired by all.

So even when things seem deathly quiet here, the occasional project will end up finished :)

Goodbye 2010, hello 2011!

2010 was, in several ways, a fairly tumultuous year for me. In some ways both the highs, and the lows, were more extreme than in previous years, yet, now that the year has changed, I feel like very little actually happened. I started and finished 7 shawls, 2 hats and a few other bits and bobs (including a few works in progress that had been left languishing in their unfinished states since before 2010).

The weather turned chilly early this year, and I had to make myself a beret that could accomodate my mop of hair under it. I'm really quite pleased with it, despite the gauge relaxing a touch more than I had foreseen.


My last completed shawl of the year was a fairly simple, but very cozy triangular shawl. It's yummy and schnuggly and worth the seemingly endless final rows.


I didn't complete the 10 shawls in 2010 challenge, and my first finished object of the year is actually a shawl I planned on finishing last year. I received the pattern as a random act of kindness and the navy yarn was a gift from my Beloved, so it was a real group effort.


And to end this strange post, I'd like to wish you all a peaceful, joyful and contented 2011. May it be a better year than the last one :)

Kuinka Olkikukka kesytetään - The taming of the Golden Everlasting

ETA: Minua viisaampi ihminen tiesi kertoa, että Päivölä sijaitseekin Valkeakoskella, eikä suinkaan Toijalassa. Oppia ikä kaikki.

A much wiser person told me, that the retreat was actually held in Valkeakoski, and not Toijala. I stand corrected.


Viime perjantaina, noin 50 naista kerääntyivät Päivölän kansanopistolle Toijalaan. Itse matkasin sinne kolme muun helsinkiläisen kanssa uhmaten ajomatkan aikana vettä, rakeita ja räntää.

Last Friday, around 50 women gathered in Toijala. To get there, three other knitters from Helsinki and I braved the rain, sleet and hail, but luckily we got there safely.



Mukana oli sekä neulojia, että kehrääjiä. Itse en ole vielä päässyt rukinomistajien joukkoon, mutta pääsin silti testaamaan toisten rukkeja, ja olen menettänyt sydämmeni usealle rukille.

Spinners and knitters were both present, and although having my own spinning wheel is still a somewhat elusive dream, I was able to try out quite a few of the wheels that were there. I believe I am in love with several wheels, oh dear.



Lukuunottamatta lauantaiaamun kolmituntista kehruusessiota, vietin itse suurimman osan viikonloppua puikot kädessä. Lahjaneuleella oli kiire, ja kotonakaan sitä ei voinut neuloa, nyt kun lahjan saaja asuu samassa ruokakunnassa allekirjoittaneen kanssa. Lauantai-iltana sain kuitenkin urakkani päätökseen, ja langat pääteltyä.
Lahja on annettu saajalleen, joten väriä tai mallia ei tarvitse enää salata (väri on Wollmeisen Strohblume, josta postauksen nimi juontaa juurensa. Anteeksi Shakespeare!)

Apart from a 3 hour spinning lesson on Saturday morning, I was attatched to my circulars for most of the weekend, as a deadline was looming. A present needed to be finished, and knitting it at home wasn't an option, as the recipient now shares my home :) Luckily my hard work was rewarded, and on Saturday evening, I was able to cast off, and sew in the ends.
The hat has been gifted to the intended recipient, so the colour and pattern are no longer a secret. (I used Wollmeise's Strohblume colourway, hence the name of the post. My profuse appologies to the Bard!)

Harmaat huivit, osa 2 - Grey shawls, part 2

Vajaa kuukausi sitten valmistunut Isbhel näyttää aloittaneen harmaiden huivien kauden. Sain tänään valmiiksi heti Ishbelin päättelemisen jälkeen aloittamani Old Man of Storr-huivin, joka kuivuukin parhaillaan sohvalla.

Tulevana viikonloppuna olevaan neuleretriittiin lähteekin eri harmaan sävyihin kääriytynyt Karoliina.

My silver Ishbel seems to have started a grey shawl boom of sorts. My Old Man of Storr shawl was finally bound off today, and it's already drying on my futon, after a quick bath.

I'm off to the 3rd knitting retreat tomorrow, and it seems like I shall be swathed in shades of grey.

Puutavillan Alarwyn tykkää brittiläisistä pukudraamoista, samoin kuin minä. Joten päädyimme toisen neulojan kanssa eilen Alarwynin vieraiksi, ja katsoimme BBC:n klassisen Ylpeyttä ja ennakkoluuloja-dramatisoinnin (juu, sen jossa Colin Firth esittä Mr. Darcya) kokonaisuudessaan.

Soputeltta-Ishbel pääsi mukaan, ja huivi sai ensimmäiset live-kohteliaisuudet jo bussissa. Illan projektiksi valikoitui Old Man of Storr-huivi joka edistyikin kohtalaisesti kuuden jakson aikana, vaikka välillä pitkin keskittyä sarjasta jutusteluun tai erikoisen hienoihin kohtauksiin.


Kohteliaana vieraana leivoin suklaa-omenakakun viemisiksi. Kakku onnistui loppujen lopuksi hyvin, vaikka ajattelemattomuuden puuska aiheutti paniikin kun taikinan koostumus rupesi muistuttamaan pikemminkin pikkuleipätaikinaa kuin kakkutaikinaa.

Huivihirviö - Monster shawl

This year I've been taking part in a challenge on Ravelry to knit 10 shawls during the year. Some participants have knitted dozens of beautiful shawls, but I'm only halfway through my first 10. One of the first shawls I started in January was Ysolda Teague's Ishbel. However, I was sidetracked by other projects, so it took me much longer than I expected to finish.

However, this beast of a shawl (so called because of the size of it) is done, finally :)

Sain vihdoin valmiiksi jo tammikuussa aloitetun Ysolda Teaguen Ishbelin. Olen vasta puolessa välissä tämän vuoden kymmenen huivin tavoitteesta, mutta Ishbel on kuitenkin ensimmäinen valmistuineista yli 500 metrin huiveista. Huivi sai alkunsa jo vuoden ensimmäisenä päivänä, mutta muut proggikset menivät sen edelle, ja sain sen vasta syyskuussa valmiiksi.

Huivi on kooltaan mallia soputeltta (josta nimikin on tullut), mutta muuten mielestäni onnistunut :)
